Attracting Native Birds at Your Centre: Why Nectar Not Seed

If your centre has bird feeders with bird seed, you may have noticed that the birds visiting are mostly sparrows, starlings, mynahs, and blackbirds. That is because bird seed attracts introduced species, not native ones.

Aotearoa's native birds eat nectar, fruit, foliage, and insects. They do not eat seed. You can even see this in the shape of their beaks: sparrows and finches have triangular beaks designed for cracking seeds, while tui and bellbirds have slender curved beaks built for sipping nectar from flowers. When we put out bird seed, we are feeding the introduced species that compete with our native birds for space and habitat.

The good news is that attracting native birds like tui, korimako (bellbirds), and tauhou (silvereye) is simple. You make sugar water nectar and put it in the right feeder.

How to make nectar

Dissolve half a cup of white sugar in one litre of warm water. Stir until fully dissolved, then let it cool completely before filling your feeder. That is it.

A few important things to keep in mind:

Use plain white sugar only. Do not use raw sugar, organic sugar, honey, or brown sugar. These contain trace minerals that can be toxic to birds, or can promote dangerous fungal growth.

Extra nectar can be stored in the fridge in an airtight jar for five to seven days.

Choosing the right feeder

Feeder design matters. Research from the University of Auckland found that feeders specifically designed for nectar-eating species were the most successful at attracting native birds. These feeders have small feeding holes tailored for the fine, tapered beaks of tui, bellbirds, and silvereyes, which means short-billed introduced species like sparrows cannot access the nectar.

DIY option.

Auckland Zoo shares a simple feeder that tamariki can help make. Take a one litre plastic milk bottle and sit it in a shallow dish or saucer. Make two to three very small holes about half a centimetre from the bottom of the bottle. This allows the sugar solution to flow out to the height of the holes. Fill the bottle with cooled nectar, screw the lid on tightly, and place it on a flat surface like an outdoor table or shelf in a spot where cats cannot reach. You do not need to fill the whole bottle. Only put in what the birds will drink in a couple of days and replace it fresh, as nectar left too long can ferment and become harmful. Note that this feeder is not designed for hanging.

Purchased option.

If you want to hang a feeder from a tree or branch, a purpose-built nectar feeder is the better choice. The Topflite Nectar Feeder (available at Animates, around $42) is designed for NZ native birds with a red base that mimics native flowers, small feeding holes for fine beaks, a bee guard, and a dishwasher-safe glass bottle. Other NZ-made options are available online.

Whichever feeder you use, place it high and out of reach of cats, ideally near native trees or shrubs.

Keeping it clean

This is important. Wash your feeder thoroughly every two to three days, especially in warm weather. Only put out as much nectar as the birds will drink in a day to keep it fresh. Dirty feeders can spread disease among bird populations.

Involving tamariki

Making nectar and setting up a feeder is a wonderful real experience for tamariki. They can measure the sugar, stir the water, help make the feeder, choose where to place it, and then observe which birds come to visit. This is kaitiakitanga in action: a simple, everyday way of caring for the native birds in your environment.

Over time, tamariki will start to recognise which birds are visiting. That is subject knowledge building naturally, for children and kaiako alike.

We moved to New Zealand about 11 months ago with two young children who needed to start kindergarten. I visited three centres, but "Our Kids Early Learning Centre" made a really good impression from the start - and what a great choice it turned out to be. When we arrived, my children knew "zero English". The staff were incredibly patient and supportive, and slowly the kids adapted, gained confidence, and started engaging with the language, culture, and other children. They made our transition to a new country so much easier. Over the months, we saw huge progress in their English and confidence. My daughter has now started school, and the centre prepared her really well for that transition. I still have my other child there and would highly recommend "Our Kids". We are very grateful to the amazing staff for all their support. ❤️

Our daughter recently graduated from Our Kids Glendene after attending from age 2 to 5, and we truly couldn’t have asked for a better start to her early years. We chose this kindy based on a strong family recommendation, and it absolutely lived up to the praise. The mixed age environment creates such a warm, family like atmosphere, with everything the children need to grow, learn, and thrive at their own pace. The teachers are incredible, caring, dedicated, and genuinely invested. They’ve become like aunties to our children. Even now we still pop in for visits and are always welcomed so warmly, it really feels like we never left. We feel so lucky to have had such a genuine, nurturing place so close to home. Highly recommend to any family looking for a warm, supportive, community focused kindy.

My son started with our kids onehunga from 8 months old. I was so nervous as first time mom how would the experience would be. Little did I know I found a really amazing place for my son. J is almost 2 years and I trusted the team to look after my baby. They are very kind, supportive, positive and I feel grateful as a mom and my son could be part of this community. Arti always amazing. Nandita, Yolanda, Mari, Liz, Anu, Tina and many more. They are amazing too. Sending many 🫶🏻 & respect ✨ to our Kaiako at Our Kids Onehunga.

As a first time mum sending my boys to daycare at 2.5years old till 5 years old, I look back and know I picked the best I could have hoped for! The facility itself is small, homey and inviting. The staff, even when management changed a couple of times, the level of care towards my boys never wavered. The aroha, the reasurrance, the transparency and kindness at this centre was incredible. Our Kids Glendene has a special place in mine and my boys hearts. Whanau to us by they time they left for school. ❤️ Thank you all staff at Our Kids, for your level of care and compassion for my beautiful boys!

As a social worker, I have had the privilege of working alongside Brooke MacClure at Our Kids Early Learning Centre. I want to acknowledge the incredible kindness, care, and dedication they show not only to the tamariki but also to the whānau I work with. They have gone above and beyond to ensure whānau are supported with their essential needs, generously providing items for those experiencing financial hardship. The level of aroha and commitment they bring to their role is truly inspiring, and it makes a meaningful difference in the lives of our community. I am very grateful for the mahi they have done for me and continue to do.
