MATAKI WAY GLEN EDEN DAYCARE

Our Kids Early Learning Centre, Mataki is now open. This centre is in a new subdivision at 3 Mataki Way, off Pleasant Road in Glen Eden, it features striking views of large native trees and across to the hills of Waitakere ranges. The new centre will offer spaces for 15 under 2s and 45 preschool children.

Our main vision is to empower children’s sense of self and foster their ability to direct their own learning in a nurturing environment that is autonomous, open, and child-centred.

The inside spaces are thoughtfully designed in a respectful and homely manner, where careful considerations have been given to the aesthetics and natural elements to help instil a sense of belonging. The centre features a stunning outdoor area, with a strong focus on the natural setting where children will be encouraged to explore, learn, and grow in an environment that is both engaging and challenging.

We have worked with an interior designer and other specialists to help achieve our vision.
We’re excited that the centre is now open and love being able to share our vision with the local community.

MATAKI WAY STAFF

Joanne Phillips

Head Teacher

I’m Jo Phillips and I’m head teacher here at Mataki Way, I feel blessed to be part of the dedicated hardworking and passionate teaching team here.

I have twenty years Early Childhood teaching experiences so you could say that teaching is my passion and it is definitely, not just a job. I love every minute of my day exploring and learning with these young children.

I am also blessed to share my life with my husband of 27 years Reg and our three now adult children – Selina, Konrad and Paul. When they were younger, I found it incredible watching them learn , explore and create new understandings and their world and the wider world of their Samoan heritage and culture.

Being with them enabled me to emphasize and understand the challenges and issues that face the whanau in our centre’s and some of the needs and aspirations they may have for their children too. I therefore love sharing and engaging with whanau especially regarding their child’s valued learning and what happens here each day and to understand the experiences children have at home that may be similar.

I believe we are all lifelong learners and learning can be not only challenging but also fun and I truly enjoy working alongside children as their curiosity, creativity and confidence grows. We can explore together and communicate ideas and working theories, whilst making discoveries about the world around us.

Chynelle Pereira

Over 2s Team Leader

Kia ora and hello! I Chynelle hail from India, the land of festivals. New Zealand became home to me in 2014 when I arrived here to complete my graduate diploma in Early Childhood Education from New Zealand Tertiary College. Back home in India, I completed my Bachelors in Sociology and History and my first year of Masters in History.

The passion for teaching emerged as I have grown up in a family filled with a majority of teachers. Watching them day in and day out inspired me to take it up as a profession. I’m glad to say that I enjoy and love every bit of it. I feel privileged to be part of an amazing team here at Our Kids, Mataki Way.

My philosophy and practice is moulded around a famous children’s advocate Magda Gerber where strong emphasis is given to respectful practice. I believe it aligns well with my beliefs of providing a stimulating, challenging yet safe and fun environment where children can naturally unfold their strengths and interests. I aim to nurture, encourage and support the children and families in the best way possible.
